NSE-Neuron-specific enolase
The glycolytic enzyme enolase (2-phospho-D-glycerate hydrolysase, EC 4.2.1.11) exists as several dimeric isoenzymes (αα,αβ, αγ, ββ and γγ). The αγ and γγ-enolase isoenzymes are also known as neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as these isoenzymes initially were detected in neurons and neuroendocrine cells. Antibodies specific for the γ-subunit are suitable for the serological determination of NSE (ie, the γγ- and αγ - isoforms of enolase).
